Jiu Jitsu University by Saulo Ribeiro
MMANonstop Review: Jiu Jitsu University is a fairly comprehensive survey of the basics, covered in a belt-by-belt perspective. The photos resemble several other recent works with the new style of tutorials, including clear pictures, and techniques portrayed from multiple perspectives in a top-down, linear fashion. The first and most important piece of advice written, and what I love most about this book is Saulo’s commitment to creating a solid defense first and foremost. Making sure you’re comfortable being uncomfortable (e.g. under mount, under side control, under knee on belly, etc). After you know how to remain calm under those positions, learning how to escape becomes clear. After you know how to escape those bad spots you can learn what to do from guard (the best of the worst positions). The book goes on to show what to do from inside your opponents guard including learning how to pass it. Ultimately you will read how to gain a superior position leading to a submission. If you carefully read Professor Ribeiro’s comments about using angles, and identifying what your partner needs in a particular submission, you will be surviving situations that you didn’t think were possible before. Jiu Jitsu University has helped me elevate my game by allowing me to study the techniques in a more mechanical and methodical way.
Overall this is a very solid instructional book on the basic self-defense techniques of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, broken down in a belt-by-belt perspective.
